YORK HAVEN, Pa. (WHTM) -

A York County municipality shot down a homeowner's backyard rifle range plan Wednesday evening.

Steve Marino, of 875 Stevens Road in Newberry Township, went before the township's Zoning Hearing Board to request a special exception.

Neighbors told abc27 Marino has been operating the range on his property, which consists of about 23 acres, for several months -- but stopped after a number of complaints were made to police.

Marino told the board he has a right to teach his children how to shoot and "defend themselves in the future," but an attorney for several neighbors said that violates the township's noise ordinance.

After hearing from several residents and expert testimony from a noise engineer, the board voted unanimously to deny Marino's request, saying he did not meet the burden for a special exception.

Marino's attorney told abc27 he will consult with his client before deciding whether or not to appeal.
