LANCASTER, Pa. (WHTM) -

A 35-year-old homeless man who lunged at officers with a knife was fatally shot this morning in the first block of N. Queen Street, according to Lancaster police.

Police said they were questioning the man about urinating in public at around 7 a.m. when he removed the knife from his pocket and charged at one of the officers.

The officer fired one shot at the man, who then fled south on Queen Street. Officers chased him and at one point used a stun gun, which had no effect, police said.

Police said the officers repeatedly commanded the man to drop the knife, but he again lunged with the knife and the officer who fired the initial shot fired two more rounds, striking the man once in the torso.

The man, who was not immediately identified, was transported to Lancaster General Hospital and underwent emergency surgery, but died of his injury at around 10 a.m., police said.

No police officers were injured.

Lancaster City Police Detectives and the Lancaster County District Attorney's Office are conducting the investigation into the shooting.
