HERSHEY, Pa. (WHTM) -

An elderly Allentown woman was fatally stabbed early Monday while visiting family in the Hershey area, according to Derry Township police.

Joyce Roth, 87, had been stabbed in the chest when officers responded to a home on Byron Road at around 3:30 a.m., police said.

Roth was transported to Penn State Hershey Medical Center where she underwent surgery, but died a short time later from a single stab wound to the chest, police said.

Police said their preliminary investigation suggests that Roth was stabbed during a burglary in the single-floor home.

Lieutenant Timothy Roche called the incident very violent and said the perpetrator stole a wallet and purses belonging to both the victim and the other residents.

It appears Roth was stabbed with a chef's knife from the kitchen while she was in a guest bedroom and crawled to the hallway, where her son and daughter-in-law heard her screams for help, police said.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Derry Township Police Department at 717-534-2202.
