LANCASTER, Pa. (WHTM) -

Lancaster police have released the name of a homeless man who was fatally shot by an officer Monday morning in the first block of N. Queen Street.

Gregory Stephen Bayne, 35, was shot after he lunged at an officer with a knife, police said.

Police previously said they were questioning Bayne about urinating in public when he pulled the knife from his pocket and charged at an officer, who fired one shot at him.

Officers then chased Bayne as he fled south on Queen Street and at one point used a stun gun on him, but it had no effect, police said.

Bayne was ordered to drop the knife, but he again lunged with the knife and the officer who fired the initial shot fired two more rounds, striking Bayne once in the torso, police said.

Bayne died later in the morning at Lancaster General Hospital.

No police officers were injured.
