Intermodal Facility gives Franklin County a lift

GREENCASTLE, Pa. (WHTM) -

The Franklin County Regional Intermodal Facility will sit on nearly 200 acres, and officials say there is room for future growth.

The terminal is home to hydraulic diesel cranes that will lift containers on and off of rail cars and trucks. There are 670 parking spaces on the property for trailers.

Norfolk Southern provided more than half of the funding for the $97 million project, and the state made up the difference.

Officials say intermodal transportation saves energy and reduces carbon emissions. An intermodal train can move a ton of freight 480 miles on a gallon of fuel.

The facility is home to 126 workers and more employment opportunities will be available near that location. Other companies are already building warehouses next door to utilize the intermodal transportation.
