Driver Charged With DUI in Fatal 581 Crash, Police ID People Killed

Update: 9 a.m.

A driver has been charged in Wednesday afternoon's fatal wreck on I-581. State Police say 34-year-old Timothy Wellons of Salem has been charged with two counts of involuntary manslaughter and DUI.  

State Police have identified the victims killed in the crash as Paul Alexander Golding, 36, of Salem, and Kenneth Graham, 54, of Lexington, North Carolina.

Update:  6:27 a.m.

Roanoke, VA - According to the Virginia Department of Transportation, two southbound lanes of I-581 have reopened following Wednesday's fiery crash that left two people dead.

The southbound right lane and right shoulder are still closed.

Both northbound lanes have reopened.

Update 7:55 p.m.:

Roanoke, VA - State police officials say two people died in a multi-vehicle accident on I-581 in Roanoke Wednesday.

Investigators say the driver of a vehicle was going north on I-581 when the driver made a sudden move in front of a semi truck.

The semi truck driver then drove through the median into the southbound lane, hitting another semi truck. Three cars behind the southbound semi truck hit the semi.

All of I-581 is closed to traffic.

Southbound traffic is being diverted off at Exit 3. Northbound traffic is being diverted off at Exit 4.

Roanoke, VA - Officials say two semi trucks and four other vehicles were involved in the accident Wednesday.

Roanoke, VA - Officials are asking drivers to avoid I-581 northbound in Roanoke. The Interstate is closed due to a tractor trailer accident. 

The accident happened in the area of the Valley View Road exit by mile marker 3. 

Southbound traffic is being diverted off at Exit 3.
