COLUMBIA, Pa. (WHTM) -

Police said they found an unresponsive driver and what appeared to be an improvised explosive device inside a car on the Route 462 bridge over the Susquehanna River in Lancaster County.

The suspected IED was removed from the 1990 Cadillac and safely destroyed by the Pennsylvania State Police Hazardous Device and Explosives Section on Wednesday, according to West Hempfield Township police.

The driver, 60-year-old Howard M. Holtzinger of Lancaster, was transported to York Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead, police said in a news release.

Officers were called to the bridge, also known as the Veterans Memorial Bridge, for a report of a single-vehicle crash at 11:20 a.m.

Police said a witness reported that Holtzinger's car had drifted slowly to the right and came to a stop resting against the bridge wall.
