Carlisle Borough officials seek to lower truck noise

CARLISLE, Pa. (WHTM) -

Carlisle Borough Council will likely vote on an ordinance to prohibit truck drivers from using their "jake brakes" in certain locations within the borough. Residents have complained about the loud noise being heard at all hours of the day.

The "jake brake" was designed to help slow down a truck that was coming down a steep mountain.

Shawn Brown is an account manager with Freightliner of Harrisburg.  He says truck breaks don't perform will when they get hot, and the "jake brake" retards the engine to help slow the truck down.

Brown does not think it's necessary for drivers to use the "Jake brake"in Carlisle Borough because there are no hills and the speed limit does not exceed 35 miles per hour in residential neighborhoods.

Borough officials say they have received strong support from the community and it's likely the ordinance will pass at Thursday's meeting.
