Lemoyne residents packed a meeting Thursday night to hear why their sewer rates could double.
Borough officials said the wastewater treatment plant is in desperate need of an upgrade to keep up with demand and new regulations.
The upgrade is expected to cost $16 million, and that's why rates could skyrocket from $40 a month to at least $80.
Borough manager Robert Ihlein said he hopes residents see the need for improvements.
"Is it worth more than your monthly cable bill?" Ihlein said. "Mine is topping a $100 these days for cable and Internet, and I think a sanitary sewer service is worth that much."
Council may vote on a new rate July 11.
Customers could see the increase in their bills this fall.
