Ephrata Community Hospital said Tuesday that an employee accessed personal medical records outside of their job duties and may have accessed the clinical information of some patients.
Social Security numbers and other financial information were not accessed by the employee, who has since been terminated, the hospital said in a news release.
Hospital spokeswoman Joanne Eshelman said there is no reason to believe that the information has been used in any way, but affected patients will be notified through personal letters as a precaution.
Eshelman said the hospital learned April 16 that the employee had accessed patient medical records, and immediately began an internal investigation that confirmed the information had been accessed.
She said the hospital has since taken steps to better protect patient information.
