Test shows Middletown sewer lines worse than thought

Posted: Updated:

Middletown officials said they found more leaks than expected during smoke tests on the borough's sewer lines in the downtown area Wednesday night.

The testing done along Union Street between Emaus and Ann streets was part of the planning process for a downtown revitalization project that will replace the deteriorating century-old, hand-laid brick pipes.

Officials expected to see smoke coming from vent stacks on buildings, manhole covers, and holes in the ground, but not as much as they saw during the test.

"We expected to see puffs here and there, but we never expected to see it gushing out of the storm sewer," borough spokesman Chris Courogen said. "It certainly confirms our problem is every bit as bad as we thought it was, and perhaps worse."

Courogen said more testing will be done.
