Pittsylvania Co. Sheriff Says Jail is More Than 300% Overcrowded

Posted:

Pittsylvania Co., VA - Sheriff Mike Taylor is speaking out on what he says is extreme overcrowding in the Pittsylvania County Jail.

Taylor says the jail has been overcrowded since it was built in 1981.

The jail was designed to house 36 inmates, but Taylor says they see anywhere from 100 to 160 inmates a day.

He says the overcrowding has led to infrastructure damage and could become a security issue.

"The last jail report, our facility was rated at about 345% overcrowded. Wouldn't it be wonderful if we didn't have to have any space for inmates, but that's not the society we live in, " Taylor said.

Taylor requested money to set up a building fund in the county budget, but supervisors had to reallocate the funds. He plans to continue working with the board to improve the conditions at the jail.
