John Betz was in a deep sleep when he heard a loud knock on his door early Thursday.
Betz said a man was screaming that there was a fire in the apartment above him. Tom Drupp kicked in two doors to make his way to Betz's second floor apartment to wake him up.
Drupp was driving home after he and a friend finished a painting project that lasted until 2 a.m.
"He could have kept driving", said Betz, "and there is a chance I would have not made it."
Drupp said he could smell smoke when he approached the 500 block of N. 10th Street. He got out of the car and tried to alert as many people who lived in the building.
A second fire call came in about an hour later. Crews were called to a home on the 500 block of N. 8th Street.
There were no injuries and officials are calling both fires "suspicious."
