Next week, the Supreme Court could announce a landmark decision on gay marriage. Today, midstaters took their support of marriage equality to the Capitol's doorsteps.
Members of groups in support of same-sex marriage rallied Saturday in hopes of raising awareness and to discourage discrimination against the gay community.
House Bill 300 and Senate Bill 200 are legislation being introduced to prevent discrimination against the LGBT community.
Many members of Saturday's rally believe pension benefits should be passed on to partners, as well as social security benefits.
"There are families who are losing partners and within 90 days of those their death, they have to come up with a 14.9% inheritance tax. It's financially devastating families all the time. In addition to the emotional devastation that they are facing," said Debra McClain, a member of the Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce.
Organizers of the rally say they had a big turnout, with much support from people of all generations.
