Authorities in Southside Announce New Statewide Scrap Metal Law

Posted:

Danville, VA - The Pittsylvania County Sheriff and Danville Police held a joint press conference on a new law about selling scrap metal Tuesday.

Starting July 1, you need a permit to buy second-hand building materials statewide. State lawmakers worked with authorities to develop the code to crack down on theft.

In Danville, close to 2,000 larcenies between 2007 and 2008 were related to copper theft.

Pittsylvania County Sheriff Mike Taylor says he's hopeful the code will be successful everywhere.

"We did see an increase, and we're hoping it's going to be a deterrent and just give us another resource that we can follow," Taylor said.

Permits are available at the Pittsylvania County Sheriff's Office and the Danville Police Department.
