Senate budget to include $5 million for Harrisburg fire services

HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) -

If the Senate's budget plan passes through the House, lawmakers will set aside $5 million for fire protection and emergency services, according to state Senator Rob Teplitz (D-Dauphin/York).

Teplitz, who voted against the Senate plan, said that amount will cover the city's annual cost of providing fire and emergency services at the Capitol Complex. It far exceeds the $2.5 million listed in the governor's original proposal and the $496,000 recommended by House Republicans.

"The state has historically underfunded the fire and emergency services provided by the city despite their value for the safety of the thousands of state employees and visitors who frequent the capital every day," said Teplitz.

The budget has to be passed by the House of Representatives and arrive at the governor's desk by the constitutional deadline of midnight June 30.
