Controversy brews over Samuel Adams 'declaration' ad

Posted: Updated:

Boston Beer Company, owner of Samuel Adams, is defending its decision to remove a reference to God in an ad featuring words from the Declaration of Independence.

The actor in the Independence Day commercial recites part of the declaration, but modifies the line "they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights," so it doesn't mention God.

The company has received angry messages on its Facebook page, including calls to boycott Sam Adams.

We asked beer lovers at Al's of Hampden in Mechanicsburg if this has left a bad taste in their mouth.

"I'm not offended by it personally, but I can see how it would be offensive to other people," said Terry Medeiros of Harrisburg.

But Susan Beaver of Hampden Township felt differently.

"Particularly because they are associating themselves with the signer of the Declaration of Independence, my opinion is they should be true to that," she said.

The company says its advertising code -- set by an industry trade organization -- prohibits religion or religious themes in all marketing materials.
