Dauphin County reports 1st West Nile sample

Posted: Updated:
HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) -

Dauphin County has collected its first mosquito sample infected with West Nile virus this year.

The infected sample was collected July 11 in Lower Paxton Township, according to a news release.

County commissioner Jeff Haste, who oversees the West Nile virus control program, said surveillance and control measures will be increased to reduce the mosquito population and prevent the virus from spreading.

No human cases of West Nile have been reported in the county this year.

Certain species of mosquitoes carry the virus. When transmitted to people, it can cause West Nile encephalitis, an infection that can result in an inflammation of the brain.
