Cumberland County Commissioners have authorized the closing of the Craigshead Bridge over the Yellow Breeches Creek on Zion Road in South Middleton Township.
The bridge will be closed in the next week and remain closed until a new bridge is completed in 2015, according to Kirk Stoner, director of planning for the county.
Stoner said Thursday that the bearings, abutments and key support components showed advanced deterioration since the Craigshead Bridge was last inspected in April.
He said repairs could be made at a cost of $20,000, but other problems are likely to arise that could require a closure and additional costly repairs in the future.
Craigshead Bridge, which carries 2,000 vehicles daily, is structurally deficient and was already slated for an estimated $3 million replacement in 2015.
