PennDOT plans rolling roadblocks on I-83

HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) -

PennDOT says rolling roadblocks starting around midnight tonight will hold up traffic on northbound Interstate 83 heading to Route 322 eastbound through the Eisenhower Interchange near Harrisburg.

Mike Crochunis, a PennDOT spokesman, said the traffic delays are necessary in order to keep traffic off of the bridge that carries Route 322 East through the Eisenhower Interchange while construction crews lower a section of the span onto new bearings.

Crochunis said state police will start the rolling roadblocks around midnight on I-83 North near Exit 44-B at 19th Street leading to the Eisenhower Interchange.

Several ramps accessing I-83 North and Route 322 East will be affected during the operation. Paxton Street to I-83 North will be blocked and southbound Eisenhower Boulevard to Route 322 East and I-283 North to I-83 South will be detoured.

The rolling roadblock on Route 322 should not take longer than 15 minutes, and the ramp blockages and detours should not last more than 30 minutes, Crochunis said.

If more time is necessary, Crochunis said construction crews will conduct a second rolling roadblock on I-83 North and traffic stoppage on Eisenhower Boulevard to complete the operation.
