LANCASTER, Pa. (WHTM) -

A Lancaster County man awaiting trial for a series of burglaries committed before an intensive two-week manhunt for him two years ago has been charged with trying to escape from the county prison.

Dwayne Armand Weir Sr. had two rope ladders fashioned out of bed sheets, according to a criminal complaint.

One of the ladders was approximately 17 feet long and was wrapped around Weir's body under his clothing, and the second was about 36 feet in length and was in a possession box in his cell, the complaint states.

The rope ladders were found May 23.

Making them would have taken "significant time and resources," a county detective said in the complaint.

Weir, 44, was charged Thursday with a felony count of attempted escape and a misdemeanor count of possessing implements of escape.

A hearing on the new charges had not been scheduled.

Weir is awaiting trial for numerous home burglaries and thefts in Lancaster, Dauphin and Lebanon counties.

He was arrested near Middletown in August 2011 following a manhunt for him the began two weeks earlier when authorities tried to arrest Weir at an East Donegal Township apartment.

Police said he eluded capture by knocking out a wall and fleeing from an adjoining apartment before stealing two vehicles and leading police on a chase through Lancaster County.

He also faces charges stemming from his arrest. Police said he became violent and tried to run down two state police troopers with his car.
