HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) -

Earlier this month, the nation learned of the grave danger crews face when battling wildfires when 19 members of an elite squad were killed while battling a wildfire in Arizona.

Just days later, dozens of local men and women departed to perform the same mission in Alaska.

Late Sunday, those firefighters returned safely to Pennsylvania, along with crews from neighboring states.

"I've got a 4-year-old and a 5-year-old girls. They are taking it a little tough right now because Daddy has been gone for a while," said Dave Felix, of State College. "There's always a chance of something going wrong, but we practice for it, we train for it."

"In light of what happened in Arizona, it has heightened our awareness, which is good and hopefully heightened our appreciation," said Ellen Ferretti, acting secretary for the state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.

The firefighters, 160 in all, stayed overnight at the Lower Swatara Fire Company and enjoyed a breakfast together this morning.

Together, they managed to deter an 85,000-acre wildfire from destroying a small town just west of Fairbanks.
