LANCASTER, Pa. (WHTM) -

A Lancaster man will serve 4-8 years in prison for towing disabled cars from area highways and selling the vehicles for scrap.

Francisco Mercado Jr. was given the sentence Monday in Lancaster County Court after pleading guilty to theft and related charges.

Prosecutors said Mercado worked for a towing company and used his employer's truck to haul off at least 18 disabled cars and trucks he found along Route 30 and Route 283 in Lancaster County and along Route 222 in Lancaster and Berks counties.

The vehicles were towed to a salvage yard and sold for scrap metal, authorities said.

Mercado was arrested last September after he allegedly towed off a decoy vehicle that police had placed on Route 222.
