Danville, VA - Violent crime statistics were at the top of the agenda Thursday afternoon at the Coalition for a Safe Danville meeting.

The group meets every couple months to discuss ways to combat crime and to earn public confidence that Danville is a safe community to live and visit. Area law enforcement, community leaders and some Danville residents were all in attendance.

Danville's Virginia State Crime Report was the main topic of discussion. The report came out last month and showed Danville's violent crime in 2012 fell by almost 14 percent. At the meeting, members of the Coalition for a Safe Danville took a thorough look at the crime statistics.

Danville Police Chief Phillip Broadfoot said they are second in the state for drug and weapons arrests. He said that's what has brought down the violent crimes, which is great news for Danville residents.

"It encourages them to go about their lives, it encourages them abut the quality of life that they have here in Danville, it's very good," said Broadfoot. "We do have a very low violent crime rate and we're very proud of that."

During the meeting members also discussed topics like neighborhood watch programs, gun safety and license plate scanners.
