Local soldiers, including new father, return home

Posted: Updated:
HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) -

Some Midstate soldiers are waking up in their own beds this morning after spending nearly a year overseas.

Members of the PA National Guard arrived in Harrisburg from Kuwait on Saturday.

They were part of the second wave of the 55th Armor Brigade, which provided security for Middle East military operations.

Among those returning: a soldier meeting his baby for the first time.

His wife gave birth five months ago.

"She's a lot smaller than I expected. She didn't look this tiny in the pictures," Specialist Robert Tran remarked upon seeing her. "I was definitely nervous how she was going to react. I'll be spending time with her and my wife, making up for being gone."

More PA National Guard members will be returning home over the next several months. The next wave will be arriving on August 10.
