VDOT Announces Plans to Blast Along Unstable Slope in Montgomery Co.
Montgomery Co., VA – VDOT says it will begin blasting along an unstable slope on I-81 at mile marker 124 in Montgomery County in a couple of days, weather permitting.
The blasting area is located within the truck climbing lane project work zone. The first blast is scheduled for July 31. VDOT says contractors anticipate multiple blasts taking place over the course of several weeks.
VDOT says traffic will be slowed on I-81 southbound beginning at mile marker 128 and northbound I-81, starting at mile marker 114 at approximately 10:30 a.m.
During blasting, the on-ramps will be restricted onto northbound Interstate 81 at exit 118 in Christiansburg and onto southbound I-81 at exit 128 in Ironto.
VDOT says future blasting dates will be scheduled on weekdays at approximately 10:30 a.m. as needed
The scheduled blasts are a result of the discovery of a crack on May 29 in the slope of I-81 southbound near mile marker 124. VDOT has been testing and surveying the area to determine the best course of action for stabilizing the slope.
