A Harrisburg man has been charged with killing his biological father at a Harrisburg area hotel three months ago.

Trent Alan Tolene, 24, was charged by Susquehanna Township police Thursday with criminal homicide and tampering with evidence, according to court documents.

Tolene's biological father, 65-year-old James Tommer, had been beaten to death before his body was wrapped in a tarp and hidden between two sheds at the Days Inn in Susquehanna Township.

According to the criminal complaint, Tommer had rented a room at the hotel and Tolene had stayed with him until April 18, the day Tolene checked out.

The cleaning staff went to the room later that day and found a large section of the carpet had been cut from the floor between the beds, and the carpet padding was soaked with blood, the complaint states.

Police were looking to check on the welfare of both men when Tolene was stopped in his father's rental car after a slow-speed pursuit on Interstate 81 the following night, the complaint states.

He was arrested for driving under the influence of drugs and theft of leased property.

According to the charging documents, Tommer's wallet, $2,900 in cash, and a withdrawal slip for $3,000 from his bank account were found in Tolene's book bag during a search of the rental car, as well as dried blood and matching carpet fibers from the hotel room.

Police said in court documents that Tolene has a history of assaults on family members.

His mother told investigators that her son choked her and locked her in a room during a cruise to the Bahamas in October 2011, according to the complaint.

Tolene was charged with harassment and assault in February 2011 for choking his brother until he passed out, and he was charged with unlawful imprisonment and other offenses after choking his father, Dale Tolene, in July 2012, the document states.

He was additionally charged in an assault on three security guards at Holy Spirit Hospital during a mental health evaluation, the complaint states.

His mother told police that Tolene has been diagnosed as having paranoid schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, and has been in several mental health institutions for extended periods of time, the document states.

A preliminary hearing was scheduled for August 9.
