Report: VA Crimes Involving Guns on the Decline

Posted:

Lynchburg, VA - Federally licensed gun dealer sale estimates show that firearm sales rose 16% in 2012 to more than 490,000 guns purchased.

During the same time frame, the number of major crimes committed with firearms dropped 5% to just over 4,000 crimes.

It's the fourth consecutive year major gun crime has dropped in Virginia.

The report quoted an assistant professor from Virginia Commonwealth University who specializes in research methods and criminology theory. He says the data indicates that more guns don't necessarily lead to more crime.

A spokesperson with the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence says, however, the real issue is how many guns are sold without background checks. He says the guns are the ones more likely to be involved in crimes.

Several bills were proposed during the last session of the General Assembly that would have required background checks for private sales or transactions, including at gun shows. They were all defeated.
