Lower Windsor fights to recover after fire

Posted: Updated:

The Lower Windsor Township board of supervisors met Thursday evening for a regularly scheduled meeting, but the discussion shifted to the future of the public works building and the department following a fire last week.

During the meeting, the board gave the green light to buy smaller, essential items such as tools. Surplus funding should cover the costs.

Board members also heard from a representative of the township's insurance company. Throughout the question and answer session, board members urged the company to speed the process. Some are worried about the precarious position the township is in with the loss sustained in the fire.

"We have no equipment to do snow removals, even to go out and do the basic maintenance things throughout the township," chairman Barry Miller said.

Officials are hoping to rebuild at the same site. However, to do that, demolition needs to begin. Officials say the insurance company is still reviewing the scene.

The township's public works building and much of its highway maintenance equipment was destroyed by the fire last Thursday.

Workers saved two trucks and lawnmowers that were in use at the time, but the fire destroyed the township's dump trucks, plows and other equipment.
