Work at tanker fire site to affect I-81 traffic Saturday night

HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) -

PennDOT is planning intermittent traffic stoppages this weekend on Interstate 81 southbound at the Route 22/322 interchange near Harrisburg.

Construction crews will be setting new beams for the Route 22 eastbound bridge over the interstate between midnight Saturday and 5 a.m. Sunday, PennDOT spokesman Greg Penny said.

Southbound traffic on I-81 will be funneled into a single lane on the approach to the interchange at around midnight, and will be stopped for up to 30 minutes as one of the new bridge beams is set on the piers flanking southbound I-81.

Drivers will have the option to detour around the closure by way of traveling on westbound Route 22/322 to Route 39, then back on eastbound Route 22/322 to southbound I-81.

The traffic pattern will be repeated for each of the six bridge beams for the span that crosses over southbound I-81.

The Route 22 eastbound bridge was severely damaged by a huge tanker truck fire May 9.

The new bridge, which cost $3.3 million, is scheduled to be open by mid-November.
