Roanoke Postal Workers Picket About Bill

Roanoke, VA - Postal workers held an informational picket in Roanoke Wednesday in an ongoing effort to educate people about an issue they say could spell the end of the postal service.

The workers demonstrated at SunTrust Plaza downtown, next to Congressman Bob Goodlatte's office.

The postal workers say they want people to understand the bills currently in subcommittee that would repeal a 2006 law, forcing the postal service to pay 75-years-worth of employee benefits in advance.

Union leaders say getting the public to understand is the challenge.

"They are astonished when they actually look at the 2006 bill, Postal Accountability Enhancement Act that requires us to do that. Actually, see it with their own eyes and then it's like the light goes off," said Carlton Cooper, Jr. with APWU Local 482.

The bills before Congress include House Bill 6-30 and Senate Bill 3-16.
