Committee proposes merging 2 Mechanicsburg fire companies

Posted: Updated:
MECHANICSBURG, Pa. (WHTM) -

For the past 100 years, two Cumberland County fire companies have been equipped with all their own gear.

As the costs of that gear rises, the Mechanicsburg Fire Consolidation Committee has proposed a merger of the Washington and Citizen fire companies.

That could mean selling duplicate equipment, possibly along with both historic downtown buildings, which can cost up to $10,000 a year each to maintain.

The proposal also calls for a new building and therefore a community fire tax to help support it now and in the future.

The proposal has been revised several times, and that's on purpose. The committee says they wanted to create a simple outline so it could accommodate the ideas from both fire departments and the borough.
