LEBANON, Pa. (WHTM) -

Lebanon police said a person was fatally struck by a passenger train Friday morning while he was walking along the tracks just west of 7th Street.

The male victim died at the scene after he was struck at around 9:40 a.m., police said.

He has been positively identified, but authorities were not immediately able to notify his next of kin.

Police said investigators spoke with a witness who saw the victim walking alone on the north side of the tracks.

The witness told authorities the victim was walking on the tie butts; the portion of the railroad tie that extends from under the steel rail.

An eastbound train approached from behind, and the victim was struck by a portion of the front engine car, police said.

The train was sounding its horn, police said.

A Norfolk Southern spokesman said the train was coming from Harrisburg. He did not know how fast the train was going, but said the track speed in the area is 40 mph.

Police said an autopsy has been scheduled and the investigation is ongoing.

Anybody who may have witnessed the incident is asked to call Lebanon police at 717-272-6611.
