Update: Lynchburg Man Arrested in Standoff Undergoes Mental Evaluation

Update 12:15 p.m.

Lynchburg, VA - Lynchburg Police say the man arrested following a standoff Sunday night is undergoing a mental evaluation.

Police first responded to the home around 3:00 p.m. Sunday afternoon after neighbors reporting seeing the man in his yard, waving a briefcase and saying bizarre things about the police department.

He wouldn't come to the door then so officers came back that evening with a SWAT team. He finally surrendered Sunday night after 10. We're told the man did have several warrants on file.

No word right now on any charges.

Lynchburg, VA - Police blocked off Circle Rd. in Lynchburg Sunday night, as they tried to talk to a man who barricaded himself in his home.

Police responded to the home at around 3 p.m. Sunday, but could not get the man to come to he door, so they left.  We're told they returned at around 7 p.m.

Neighbors say officers surrounded the home, and swat teams took position.

In the more than an hour that we were on the scene, you could hear police using a loud speaker ordering the man to come out, and they said they had an arrest warrant for him.

The man surrendered to police at around 10:15 p.m., but not before police used some sort of pole attached to their swat truck to bust out windows.

Neighbors say the man has been acting unusual lately.  They say he was seen in his yard shaking a briefcase and screaming the words "nuclear technology for LPD."

One man we talked to said his mother was in the house next door and she was hiding in her basement.

We're told by neighbors that the man was taken away by police.

We'll bring you updates as they come into our newsroom.
