The Cumberland Valley School District has released a statement regarding Dr. William Harner, a former superintendent at the district. Dr. Harner was fired from his post as acting education secretary.
"For decades, Cumberland Valley School District has maintained its tradition of soaring to excellence. This is the result of leadership, quality staff, a supportive Board of School Directors, and a deeply rooted support system of parents and the greater CV community. At Cumberland Valley, we have always stayed true to our mission of taking care of every aspect of educating our students - as our first priority.
It has been widely reported in the media that Cumberland Valley School District conducted an investigation into allegations against Dr. Harner during his tenure as District Superintendent. The District continues to maintain the stance that, due to privacy, we are unable to comment on any specific personnel matter. Speaking in strict generalities, there are procedures and protocols in place regarding actions taken upon receiving a concern about a staff member. Such procedures include an appropriate investigation into the concerns as expressed. Any further action is dependent upon the outcome of an investigation. The foregoing notwithstanding, any allegations against Dr. Harner during his tenure as District Superintendent were fully investigated, and at no time was Dr. Harner found to have violated any law, regulation, or district policy.
Dr. Harner submitted a letter of resignation in May to accept the appointment as Acting Secretary of Education, prior to a board vote regarding renewal of his contract. In August, the Office of Inspector General contacted Cumberland Valley School District seeking information related to Dr. Harner's employment with the District. It is our understanding that the Office of Inspector General was conducting a routine background check of Dr. Harner prior to submitting Dr. Harner's nomination to the Senate for confirmation. With Dr. Harner's prior knowledge and authorization, Cumberland Valley School District released the information requested by the Office of Inspector General earlier this month. Any subsequent actions by the Commonwealth regarding his employment with the state have been made independently of Cumberland Valley School District."
The Corbett administration has not said why they asked for Dr. William
Harner's resignation. However, sources say the administration learned
about a personnel issue that surfaced from Harner's time at Cumberland Valley.
Executive Deputy Secretary of Education Dr. Carolyn Dumaresq is now
acting secretary. She's a former superintendent in the Central Dauphin
and Steelton-Highspire school districts. She was also executive director
of the state's teachers union.
