UPDATE: VDOT Lifts Detours on I-81 After Stabilizing Slope

Posted:

Update Thursday 5 p.m.:

Montgomery Co., VA - VDOT has released a traffic update Thursday.

The detours on Interstate 81 have been lifted.

Those detours had traffic really backed up all day.

VDOT closed the lanes Tuesday after discovering an unstable slope where crews are blasting in Montgomery County.

That slope has been stabilized and the road is back open.

-------------------------

Montgomery Co., VA – VDOT highway officials are closing both southbound lanes of Interstate 81 near Blacksburg due to an unstable slope.

VDOT says traffic is being detoured at exit 132 onto Route 460 and back onto I-81 at exit 118 in Christiansburg.

VDOT traffic cameras available to ABC 13 show no traffic on the southbound lanes between mile markers 132 and 118.

The detour will remain in place until at least Wednesday, but officials say it could take up to 10 days to stabilize the slope.

Crews have been blasting to add a truck climbing lane.

Monday, a 50-foot existing crack grew to 120 feet.

Experts looked at the slope and closed the lanes.

VDOT warns to expect delays.
