Construction project becomes costly for Marietta neighborhood

Posted: Updated:
MARIETTA, Pa. (WHTM) -

Residents who live on West Fairview Avenue in Marietta say their neighborhood is changing, but it's coming at their expense.

A construction project is widening the roadway, but it is creating additional costs for home owners.

Borough officials wanted this project in place several years ago, but residents pushed back. Several neighbors filed suit to prevent the construction from taking place again, but this time a county judge ruled in favor of the borough.

Now residents have to pay up to bring their driveways level with the street.

Barbara Kauffman says it will cost her $3,000 plus another $5,000 to put in a new sidewalk that the borough is requiring.

Neighbors are also responsible for paying for tree removal if its in the path of the sidewalk.

Some residents hope council will help keep costs down by waiving the requirement to install a sidewalk.
