UPDATE: Accidents, Detours Cause Delays on I-81

Posted:

UPDATE: 2:20 p.m.

Botetourt Co., VA - The accident at mile marker 167.5 appears to have been cleared. A VDOT traffic camera shows traffic moving again at that location. There is still congestion in the area, however from earlier accidents.

UPDATE: 1:54 p.m.

Botetourt Co., VA – Multiple tractor trailer accidents are backing up traffic on I-81 northbound and southbound in Botetourt County.

According to VDOT Spokesperson Jason Bond, there was a tractor trailer accident earlier Wednesday near mile marker 168 northbound. That accident was cleared.

Another tractor trailer accident has one northbound lane closed at mile marker 167.5, Bond says.

As ABC 13 was on the phone with Bond, another tractor trailer accident had just occurred at mile marker 168.2 southbound, closing the left lane.

All accidents involve tractor trailers sliding into the median.

VDOT cameras available to ABC 13 show the delays and at least one of the accidents.

Traffic backups are at least five miles, mainly in the northbound lanes.

Heavy rain was in the area earlier in the day, and the Interstate is wet, however no cause has been officially released for any of the accidents.

Complicating traffic on I-81, the southbound lanes of I-81 near Christiansburg are still closed as crews work to stabilize a slope.

A detour is in place from mile marker 118 to mile marker 132, and could remain in place for over a week.

Stay with ABC 13 for further updates.
