HANOVER, Pa. (WHTM) -

A Hanover man is headed to trial for decapitating his father during a brutal knife attack last month.

Scott Schaffer, 32, was held for court at his preliminary hearing Tuesday morning.

Schaffer allegedly killed his father on the night of Aug. 1 inside their home in the 100 block of Stock Street.

Police said 62-year-old Steven Schaffer was stabbed multiple times with a long kitchen knife and suffered a "catastrophic injury" to his neck.

Authorities said Scott Schaffer confessed to the crime when he called 911 and was covered in blood as he waited for police on the front porch.

He later told investigators that he killed his father because he wanted to go to prison, police said.

He is headed to trial on counts of first- and third-degree murder and abuse of a corpse.

His formal arraignment was scheduled for Oct. 11.
