Firefighter impersonators enter Hershey home

HERSHEY, Pa. (WHTM) -

The Hershey Fire Department is issuing a warning for Derry Township residents. They said someone is impersonating their firefighters to get into homes.

The department said two men recently showed up at a home on West Areba Avenue, claiming they were there to do a home safety inspection and smoke alarm check.

Fire Chief Patrick Leonard says the department does not conduct random home visits. He said it's always initiated by the homeowner and they will arrive in a marked fire department vehicle. Chief Leonard also said they never solicit donations over the phone.

Derry Township Police Chief Patrick O'Rourke says the men were let into the house, but the homeowner was not injured and nothing was taken. O'Rourke says everyone should ask for proper identification when unexpected visitors knock on the door and if they feel uncomfortable, close the door and call police.
