New Housing Options in Madison Heights for Special Needs

Madison Heights, VA - A new completely handicap accessible apartment complex will officially open to the public Tuesday afternoon in Madison Heights.

The manager of Phelps Road Place Apartments says it's filling a growing need in our community. And its units are setting the standard to help people live independently.

A lot's changed since Robert Lewis Poindexter was a Navy man. The 87-year-old is mostly bound to his motorized scooter, but enjoys independent life nonetheless.

"I can stand up long enough to put my britches on. But other than that, I can't do any walking at all," Poindexter explained.

Poindexter was one of the first people to move into The Phelps Road Place Apartments. The finishing touches are still going up all around him.

"There's just a huge need. And affordable, that's the thing, affordable," said the manager, Pat Fisher.

All 22 units are handicap accessible, come with roll-in showers, along with geothermal heating and cooling.

There's also an emergency pull chord. In case someone falls, they pull it and emergency services are on the way.

The security system allows residents to see their visitors first, before allowing them inside the door. There are also doorbells with flashing lights for residents who are deaf and raised garden beds for the community garden.

"I don't know whether there's a shortage or not. But, handicap people need them. That's for sure," said Poindexter.

You must qualify to live in these apartments, they are based on need.

If you want to check them out in person, they're holding an open house from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday afternoon.
