Suspect dead, troopers injured after bank robbery chase

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. (WHTM) -

A bank robbery suspect who led authorities on a chase through Franklin and Cumberland counties is dead, according to state police.

Trooper Robert Hicks, a state police spokesman, said the hours-long incident came to an end Monday night when the suspect crashed his vehicle into a tree in the 400 block of Roxbury Road in Upper Mifflin Township and died.

The suspect's name was not immediately released.

Hicks said the incident began when the armed man robbed the M&T bank on Lincoln Way West near Chambersburg shortly before 5 p.m.

He fled in a black minivan that was spotted by a trooper, and a pursuit ensued until the trooper was injured and lost contact with the suspect's van, Hicks said.

Hicks did not say how the trooper was injured.

An abc27 News source said the trooper was shot in the foot in the 1100 block of Harmon Road near Newburg, and was flown to Penn State Hershey Medical Center by Life Lion helicopter.

Authorities searched for the suspect in North Newton and Upper Mifflin townships west of Newville until the vehicle was eventually spotted again and another pursuit ensued with the help of state police helicopters.

Hicks said multiple troopers were injured in the second pursuit, but none of them suffered life threatening injuries.

The initial pursuit prompted Shippensburg University to send an alert to students as police chased the suspect to the area.

Residents of Upper Mifflin Township were advised to stay in their homes, lock their doors, and to not answer their doors except for a law enforcement officer while police searched the area.

The incident is under investigation by state police, the district attorneys of Franklin and Cumberland counties, and the Cumberland County coroner.

Authorities said more information would be released at a news conference Tuesday at 11 a.m.
