New Route 743 bridge opens in Hershey

HERSHEY, Pa. (WHTM) -

PennDOT has opened a new bridge for Route 743 in Hershey.

The bridge over the Norfolk Southern railroad tracks opened to traffic this morning just before 8 a.m. Friday.

The new bridge was built east of the old bridge near the entrance for the Zoo America.

This work is part of a $12 million construction project that began in 2010 to realign the intersection between Route 743, also known as Park Avenue, and Route 422 in downtown Hershey.

The project includes pedestrian underpasses under Route 422 and Route 743 near the zoo.

The old bridge, which was structurally deficient, will be demolished.

The intersection still needs final paving before mid-October.

The project is expected to wrap up by the end of November.
