Harrisburg City Council approves incinerator sale

Posted: Updated:
HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) -

Harrisburg City Council voted 6-1 in favor of the sale of the incinerator to Lancaster County Solid Waste Management.

The sale will likely wipe out the $345 million debt that is attached to the incinerator.

Many residents urged council members to hold off on voting and take a closer look at the plan that calls for taxpayers to pay nearly twice the rate as neighboring communities.

The Harrisburg Authority already approved the sale.

City Council also voted to eliminate the residency requirement for police officers and other management-level positions, and they approved rate hikes for parking meters.

The entire recovery plan goes before Commonwealth Court for approval on Thursday.
