2 die in Newmanstown house fire

Posted: Updated:

An elderly Lebanon County couple died this morning after a fire in their Newmanstown home.

State police said 64-year-old June F. Long died in her home at 118 N. Sheridan Road and her husband, 68-year-old Philip F. Long, was flown to Reading Hospital and pronounced dead in the emergency room.

Neighbors said they were awakened by the smell of smoke at around 1:30 a.m. They saw the flames and called 911.

"We knew they were still in the house because their vehicles were here and they weren't outside," neighbor Butch Keppley said. "We knew that they were still in there, but there's nothing much we could do"

Neighbors did their best to break windows and the door to rescue the couple, but it was just too late.

"It just looked like a ball of fire," neighbor Heather Keppley said. "The porch was lit up. It just looked like lights were going on in the whole house. It was just - flames were everywhere."

"We tried. That's all you can do," Butch Keppley said. "They had tried before I got down here to get in and they just couldn't do it. They just couldn't get in."

Police said they found no smoke detectors in the home, and officials said clutter in the home presented a challenge to firefighters.

Police did not say how the fire started, but said it was an accident and started in the living room.
