10 Year Old With Muscular Dystrophy Practices With LU Football Team

Posted:

Lynchburg, VA - When the Liberty Flames football team took to the field Thursday for their Friday pre-game practice, they were joined by an additional player.

He's small, he's young, and he suffers from a form of muscular dystrophy.

His parents say he'll never have the opportunity to run down the sideline and catch a game winning pass, or put on a jersey to join his team on game day.

But Thursday, with the help of the flames football team, he came as close as he could.

He took to the field feeling like a first string Flames quarterback.

10-year0old Westley Groseclose watched in awe as the Liberty University Flames football team starts some of their warm up drills. At one point in the practice he's called out, to a team huddle.

"How you doing there buddy; Good to see you" said Liberty Flames' Head Coach, Turner Gill.

He shakes Gill's hand, and he's presented with a gift. His own jersey with his favorite number; 444, a family tradition his Dad started.

"We always just kiss the clock at 4:44 for good luck" said Westley's father.

Westley struggles to walk. He has duchenne, a form of muscular dystrophy; a disease that only one in 3,600 boys will have.

Within years, it will make him immobile.

"You can take all the negatives that this disease throws at you and you can crawl under the table and cry, but we look at all the positives, and this event like this is a positive" said Jessica Groseclose, Westley's Mother.

The organization, Coach to Cure MD set up Westley with a tour of the flames facilities. The organization pairs young boys suffering from MD with college teams from across the country.

"I'm just looking forward to watching them and having fun" said Westley.

So for one day, he became a part of this team.

And with his family by his side, he hit the locker room, put on a helmet, and would come out onto this stadium's field, like a true Flames football player.

Westley is in the fourth grade at Pocahontas Elementary School in Powhatan, outside of Richmond. His family has no history with Liberty University, but when asked tonight, they all unanimously confirmed that they'll forever be Flames fans.
