UAB hopes to have Jamarcus Nelson ready for FAU

UAB hopes it will be able to unleash it's top play maker on Conference USA.

Blazers coach Garrick McGee is taking a wait and see approach to whether wide receiver Jamarcus Nelson will be in the lineup against FAU in UAB's Conference USA opener. Nelson injured his ankle in last week's loss to Vanderbilt.

"He's still in a boot," McGee said. "I think he's feeling a little better, but his strength is his speed and how fast he is. We've got to be careful with him this week and see if we can get something out of him toward the end of the week.

"Like I've been saying, we're fortunate if (Nelson) can get out there. He gives us the best chance to win."

Nelson has six touchdowns in UAB's first four games, having caught four TD passes, one on a kick return and one on a punt return.

Darius Powell picked up the slack after Nelson's injury. The sophomore caught five passes for 56 yards and a touchdown in the second half against Vanderbilt.

"If JJ can't go, (Powell) will start at that position," McGee said. "He's really good with the ball in his hands. He came in the game the other day and made plays for us--he lined up at quarterback for a play. We're really happy to have the kid on our team."

UAB plays FAU Saturday at Legion Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
