HANOVER, Pa. (WHTM) -

An elderly woman died at a hospital after a fire early Thursday in her Hanover home.

Barbara Pressel, 79, died in the burn unit of the Lehigh Valley Hospital in Allentown at 9:46 a.m. as the result of burns to her body and smoke inhalation, according to the Lehigh County Coroner's Office.

Her death was ruled an accident.

Firefighters had removed Pressel from her ranch-style home at 131 Deguy Avenue after responding to the call around 2:50 a.m.

"It is tragic and we're thinking of their family; a daughter and a son that she has," neighbor Olivia McBride said.

"It's such a shock because I knew when I went back to bed I had said some prayers and I said 'please take good care of Barb,' " friend and neighbor Debbie Poist said.

Poist lives next door and knew Pressel for 40 years. She said when she saw the fire she feared the worst.

"I have never seen so many fire trucks, and first I heard this screaming that we don't usually here around here, screaming and loud bangs," Poist said.

Another neighbor, Michael Somers, said today's events will effect the entire neighborhood.

"It makes you wonder that anything can happen, make sure it doesn't happen to your house and the people you love," he said. "I didn't know her that well, but that doesn't matter. She lived right here, pretty close to me."

Neighbors said Pressel was a heavy smoker who occasionally smoked in her home.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
