Weis Markets says thousands of customers who used a credit or debit card Saturday night were billed extra charges because of a technical error.
More then 4,800 customers who made purchases with their cards 5 p.m. to 12 a.m. experienced the multiple transactions, the company said in a news release Thursday.
Weis Markets said its payments processor, First Data, had an outage and the back-up system did not function as designed.
The company said its customer service teams have been working closely with First Data to identify the duplicate transactions, and First Data has issued refunds to all impacted cardholders.
The refunds were made beginning Tuesday and were completed Wednesday, the news release stated. Most customers will see their refunds posted within 24 to 48 hours.
Weis apologized for the confusion and problems experienced by its customers. The company said it is analyzing the incident with First Data closely to prevent it from happening in the future.
Any customers who should have a refund and hasn't received one should call First Data at 1-800-511-1450 between the hours of 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. Monday through Friday.
