Attorney General Kathleen Kane hired her cousin, Colleen Tighe, shortly after taking office in January to be her executive assistant.
The position pays $56,665.
Kane's spokesman, Joe Peters, said Tighe proved her abilities during the campaign and Kane has a comfort level with her.
"She has every right to select the staffer who is going to be her closest aide, the person who spends the most time with her," Peters said. "There's also a great deal of trustworthiness and loyalty with Tighe."
Kane was criticized earlier this year for promoting her twin sister, Ellen Granahan, within the AG's office. The promotion came with a nearly 20-percent pay hike.
Last November, Kane became the first woman and first Democrat ever elected Attorney General in Pennsylvania. In fact, she got more votes than anyone else on the ballot, including President Barack Obama and Senator Bob Casey.
